WhatsApp Profile Photo Requirements
WhatsApp accepts JPG and PNG images. The recommended size is 500x500 pixels for a crisp result, though WhatsApp will accept larger images and resize them internally. The important thing is the aspect ratio: upload a square image to control what stays centered after WhatsApp applies its circular crop. Images under 200x200 pixels may look blurry on high-resolution screens.
Step 1: Crop to a Square First
Before resizing, crop your image to a 1:1 square ratio. Open the ToolMint Image Cropper. Upload your photo. Select the 1:1 aspect ratio lock. Drag the crop box to center the subject — your face, logo, or focal point — within the square. Click Crop and download. This step ensures the final image shows exactly what you want visible after WhatsApp applies the circular frame.
Step 2: Resize to 500x500 Pixels
Open the Image Resizer. Upload the cropped square image. Enter 500 in both the width and height fields. Click Resize and download. The result is a 500x500 pixel square JPG ready for WhatsApp upload. File size should be under 1MB automatically at this size.
Uploading the Resized Photo to WhatsApp
On WhatsApp mobile: tap your profile icon, then tap the profile photo, then tap the camera or photo icon to update. Select the prepared square image from your Photos or Files app. WhatsApp will show a circular preview with drag handles. Because your image is already square with the subject centered, the preview should look correct without any further adjustment.
Doing Both Steps in One
If the image is already roughly square or the subject is centered, you may only need the resize step. Open Image Resizer, set both dimensions to 500, enable aspect ratio lock, and download. Check the result — if the subject is well-centered, no separate crop is needed.
